An explosion of sizable magnitude has caused 15 deaths and almost 50 injuries near the PIDC building on Club Road in Karachi. Initial reports suggest that the explosion targeted the DIG CID’s office in the area. Houses in the immediate vicinity have been destroyed and a massive shockwave was heard throughout the city, shattering glass windows kilometers away.
According to Express 24/7 correspondent Ahmed Jung, numerous injuries are being reported. Express News Correspondent Nadeem Khan reports the intensity of the explosion was such that it was heard for many kilometers around and nearby buildings have been damaged.
At least 15 people have been killed and 48 others sustained injuries in a powerful blast at CID building located in a very sensitive area of the metropolis, Geo News reported Thursday.
The explosion took place in a very busy area. Other than the PIDC building, there is also the Chief Minister House, Governor House, Pearl Continental Hotel and Sheraton in the area.
The powerful blast brought down the whole building of Central Investigation Department (CID) located in the most sensitive area in the central area of the metropolis. Office of DSP Saddar was also partially damaged as a result of the blast
A powerful shock wave released by the blast also shattered windowpanes of a number of surrounding buildings. Windows in approximately 2 kilometers in each direction were shattered.
Banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan has claimed responsibility of the attack.
Home Minister Sindh Dr. Zulfiqar Mirza reached the scene and stated that the magnitude of the blast seemed similar to the one that levelled the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad in September 2008. Approximately 600 to 1000 kg were used in that attack that completely devastated the hotel in Islamabad.
The blast is being condemned by all sections of civil society, political parties and religious groups and sects, as updates about casualties and rescue are coming in. Police and Rangers have also apprehended suspicious people from the area.
