Oklahoma tornado kills 91

Emergency crews and volunteers continued to work through the early morning hours Tuesday in a frantic search for survivors of a huge tornado that ripped through parts of Oklahoma City and its suburbs, killing at least 91 people, 20 of them children, and flattening whatever was in its path, including at least two schools.

Much of the tornado damage appeared to be in the suburb of Moore, where rescue workers struggled to make their way through debris-clogged streets and around downed power lines to those who are feared trapped under mountains of rubble.

 

Death toll crosses 1000 in Bangldesh building collapse

Crews working through the rubble at the Bangladesh building collapse site found a woman trapped in the wreckage and plucked her to safety Friday.

"I'm alive. Please rescue me," she said.

After she was pulled out of the debris, she was rushed to a hospital, an army official said.

Lahore LDA fire kills 9

Fire at Lahore Development Authority (LDA) Plaza is finally under control after 20 hours of struggle, authorities said on Friday.

The blaze in the13-story building, which had broken out at 11:40 AM on Thursday, killed at least nine people and injured several others.

It was not immediately known how many people were in the building when the fire erupted.

 

Iran earthquake, 34 dead

Iran says a moderate earthquake rattled a region near the country's main nuclear reactor, but there were no reports of damage or deaths in the surrounding area.

The official Islamic Republic News Agency says Monday's quake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.1 and was centered near Kaki, about 60 miles southeast of Bushehr on the Persian Gulf coast.

A more powerful 6.1 temblor struck the same area last month, killing at least 37 people and raising calls for greater international safety inspectors at the nuclear reactor in Bushehr.

 

Sudan gold mine collapse, more than 60 dead

More than 60 miners were killed this week in the Darfur region when the gold mine they were working in collapsed, a police spokesman said Thursday. The mine in the Jebel Amir area of North Darfur had recently reopened after fighting between two tribes over access to the mine had forced it to close in January. A member of Parliament from the area said that the mine collapsed on Monday.
