2 years later, tsunami still taking serious toll on Japan

Just above the din of tractors and backhoes sifting through rubble, Usuzawa Ryoichi begins to sob. In the two years since the tsunami in Japan, the 64-year-old has only returned a handful of times to the place where his home used to be.

Magnitude 8.0 quake struck near Santa Cruz islands, briefly triggering tsunami warnings for several Pacific nations.

A powerful earthquake has struck off the Solomon Islands, and generated a tsunami of up to 1.5 metres that damaged dozens of homes in the South Pacific island chain, but authorities cancelled warnings for tsunamis on more distant coasts.

Plane crash in Almaty kills at last 20 passengers

A passenger plane has crashed near Kazakhstan's commercial capital, Almaty, killing at least 20 people, officials say.

The CRJ-200 aircraft was travelling from the northern town of Kokshetau.

Kazakhstan's Scat airlines said it believed everyone on board died when it crashed in heavy fog at 13:00 (07:00 GMT) on approach to Almaty's airport.

 

Military train crash kills 19 in Egypt

A military train carrying recruits has derailed south of Egypt's capital Cairo, killing at least 19 people and injuring more than 100, officials say.

The train was travelling to an army camp in Cairo when it came off the tracks in the Badrashin area of Giza.
