Map on the wall,Who is the racist of them all?

E-mail Print PDF

When two Swedish economists set out to examine whether economic freedom made people any more or less racist, they knew how they would gauge economic freedom, but they needed to find a way to measure a country’s level of racial tolerance. So they turned to something called the World Values Survey, which has been measuring global attitudes and opinions for decades.

US Military: violating national and personal boundaries

E-mail Print PDF

There is a lot of talk but little action when it comes to combating rape in the American military.

Last weekend, the US Air Force's sexual assault prevention chief was arrested on charges of sexual battery - a fitting prelude, no doubt, to the Pentagon's just-released report on soaring sex crimes in the military.

Psychiatrists’ bible discovered

E-mail Print PDF

The long-awaited, controversial new edition of the bible of psychiatry can be characterized by many numbers: its 947 pages, its $199 price tag, its more than 300 maladies (from "dependent personality disorder" and "voyeuristic disorder" to "delayed ejaculation," "kleptomania" and "intermittent explosive disorder"), each limning the potential woes of being human.

But to the psychiatrist who shepherded the tortuous creation of the "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders," perhaps the single most important number is the "5" in its title: This is the DSM-5, not the DSM-V.

Area 14/8: A Case of National Social Ignorance

E-mail Print PDF

As our nation in tatters cries out for a savior through the crevices of a skeptical general election, everyone seems to have something to say. While a number of analysts and PTI supporters tend to rationalize the despair through baseless discourses such as ‘An illiterate nation chose an illiterate leader’ and the more plausible,‘the elections were rigged. What a rotten, corrupt system’,the trends of a loquacious and influential social media are left out. So let me ask, what is this social media? How did it become into a dreadful Lernaean Hydra that cannot be beheaded through a run-of-the-mill sword? Also,is there anything remotely Herculean about Mian saab?

Towards a new social cleavage: Burgers vs Bunkebabs

E-mail Print PDF

The one word to take away from Elections 2013 is ‘burger’, because allegedly, these upper middle class yuppies, aka burgers, decided to come out of their centrally air-conditioned homes and vehicles, wearing their expensive clothes, branded sunglasses, and sunblock of course, to vote for their leader, the supreme double patty beef burger, Imran Khan.

Do we finally have a definition of what constitutes a burger? Not really. Burgers are much more intricate: they drive snazzy vehicles; use gel in their hair; smell good; have expensive smartphones in their hands; live a vibrant virtual life on Facebook and Twitter; converse in English; are susceptible to high temperatures and humidity; are often seen at fashion shows and the latest eateries; and occasionally travel abroad for leisure as well.

FP Analysis: Destination Nowhere

The atmosphere is heavy with the smell of rotting corpses, rust and petrol. A beat-up old Rolls Royce, almost on the verge of collapse with a small Union Jack flag on its bonnet, carries the burden of conjoined twins that insist on being driven to the Promised Land creaking and moaning under the weight of their dreams. The fraternal conjoined twins are a sight- the smaller, weaker twin gives the impression that his enthusiasm for the road-trip is the only thing keeping his soul and body intact while the bigger, healthier brother smirks on.

Why I support PML-N

E-mail Print PDF

The people of Pakistan have finally spoken and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has won by a landslide. Supporters of this party are undoubtedly elated; they might not have been as expressive in declarations of their support but they certainly have been demonstrative of their support through the ballot.

I voted for PML-N because I felt it satisfactorily addressed the list of pressing matters that I personally prioritise for Pakistan:
